About AuthAura

Auth means “self-originating.” Aura means “presence.”

Philosopher Walter Benjamin, in The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, introduced the idea of “aura” — the immeasurable, indescribable quality that separates an original work from its copies. He believed aura is bound to time. It cannot be replicated. It exists only once, in one place.

Imagine standing in front of a Van Gogh original, next to a printed poster of the exact same image. The two look identical. But the feeling of standing before the original — and the feeling of looking at the poster — are nothing alike. Whatever fills that gap is “aura.”

Ceramics work the same way. A handmade cup has it — not because “handmade” is magic in itself, but because it was shaped by a real person, on a real afternoon, through a real choice. A mass-produced one, made identically a thousand times over, simply never had the chance. “Aura” doesn’t come from the craft, but the person behind it.

“Aura” continues to happen — by real hands, making real choices, today. It is being made again, in the present tense, by whoever picks up the clay next.

Every piece in the AuthAura collection sits somewhere on a line between old and new — in its form, its pattern, its motifs.

Some pieces hold onto traditional forms — the shapes that have poured tea and held rice for centuries — but carry patterns and motifs that speak in a distinctly contemporary voice. Others take the opposite path: a modern silhouette, dressed in the retro patterns and glazework of an earlier era. And the remaining selections step fully into the contemporary, trading historical reference for shapes, forms, and patterns that feel entirely of today.
